Fat Poppadaddys is the Funky Alternative rocking 9 cities across the nation.
Often copied, never bettered! Award winning DJs play a selection of INDIE, 60s, HIP HOP, FUNK, DNB, ELECTRO, 80s, DUB STEP AND REGGAE, mash it all up and keep the dancefloor packed full.
Somewhere back in the mists of time (about 1998 a short period after The Fez Club first opened it’s doors in Cambridge) Christian Mayne was DJing at Chicago Rock Café (what you Cambridge folks may now know as The Place). Back then, nightclubs like that didn’t really do music other chart/dance/RnB and while Christian was rocking the students to a soundtrack of Britpop, Northern Soul and Big Beat, the management were deciding it was too way out for them… He needed a new place, somewhere open minded that were willing to take a risk on a student friendly night that didn’t stick to the rules… The Fez Club welcomed him…
The first incarnation of Fat Poppadaddys was born… unfortunately, it had the name ‘Magic Mondays’.
Things were pretty good, a decent soundtrack of alternative hits were being played alongside a few club staples of the day, but something needed to happen to give Magic Mondays an identity of it’s own, and while they worked well, the Dance music was the thing everyone else was doing… the Modjo’s, the Stardust’s, the Basement Jaxx’s they all had to go… the thing we were really good at, the thing no-one else in the city was doing was pulling out forgotten funk, dancefloor jazz and northern soul gems and mixing them with the indie/britpop hits of the time and classic 60s alt-night staples. We found our niche, now we just needed a name…
Fat Poppadaddys, a name lifted from a Quincy Jones blaxploitation soundtrack, sounded unlike anything else in nightclubs… that still rings true today, and it perfectly conjures the spirit of the night, a bit quirky and unique but overall funky!
We actually started out with the name “Fat Poppadaddys Psychedelic Swinging Pussycat Club” (Austin Powers had just come out… we were caught up in the moment!) but decided the more succinct Fat Poppadaddys was a little easier on the tongue.
Since the late 90s, we’ve weathered plently of musical storms, only ever picking the most interesting bits from an ocean of mediocrity. Today, you will hear the odd dubstep tune, but you’re just as likely to hear some classic Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Wonder alongside it… We still dig through the crates to bring fresh old music to the fore and we guarantee you’ll not find a night quite like ours!
